Sevilla 3-3 Liverpool: Klopp's men crumble as Ben Yedder and Pizarro guide incredible fightback
The inquest will no doubt begin after a second-half capitulation.
Sevilla 3-3 Liverpool
- Liverpool fail to tighten their grip on top of Group E with a memorable draw over second-placed Sevilla.
- Jurgen Klopp's men were 3-0 up and cruising thanks to goals from Firmino and Mane.
- But a Ben Yedder brace and a late Pizarro effort saw the Reds' crumble in Andalusia.
- Liverpool: Karius, Gomez, Klavan, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Coutinho, Mane, Salah, Firmino.
- Sevilla: Sergio Rico, Mercado, Geis, Lenglet, Escudero, Pizarro, Nzonzi, Banega, Sarabia, Nolito, Ben Yedder.
Full-time: Sevilla 3-3 Liverpool
Well, make of that what you will.
Liverpool were 3-0 up and cruising at half-time thanks to a Firmino brace and a Mane header, but two from Ben Yedder and a late, late Pizarro strike have handed Sevilla one point and an evening to remember.
The inquest will start for Klopp's side, who should have been home and hosed after the first period, but Berizzo's men will care not. Still much to decide in Group E.
That's it for our coverage of the goings on in Sanchez Pizjuan. Have a good evening.
Half-time: Sevilla 0-3 Liverpool
The perfect half for Liverpool, who have made Sevilla collapse in front of their fervent fans.
Firmino has scored twice, his strikes sandwiching Mane's close-range header. They've cut their hosts to bits, though they do have Karius to thank for keeping them in the lead at 1-0, the German saving brilliantly from Nolito.
Karius keeps Liverpool's lead intact!
Liverpool's defence is alarmingly stretched as Nolito chops inside Gomez and fires goalbound. Karius manages to deny the Spaniard, tipping his shot onto the post.
Sevilla goes close just moments late through Ben Yedder, who beats Karius but also the post. The hosts should be level, and Liverpool need to get their act together.
The teams are walking out onto the pitch. A final reminder of the starting line-ups:
Liverpool: Karius, Gomez, Klavan, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Coutinho, Mane, Salah, Firmino.
Sevilla: Sergio Rico, Mercado, Geis, Lenglet, Escudero, Pizarro, Nzonzi, Banega, Sarabia, Nolito, Ben Yedder.
Who are you backing?
Jurgen Klopp's pre-match thoughts:
"Hoffenheim had a longer [unbeaten home] run, but we know how strong they are how special the atmosphere is here, I try to prepare the boys for it and we'll see how we handle it.
"[The game against Sevilla at home] was one of our best games, we should have scored much more, it was a really good game. the main thing's that changed is Phil, the performance was really good but we need to do better tonight it's their home. We need to do the right things, we need to fight and be aggressive, we have grown since then.
"Whoever's here tonight, enjoy."
Less than half an hour to go until kick-off at the Sanchez Pizjuan.
A reminder of the team news:
Liverpool: Karius, Gomez, Klavan, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Coutinho, Mane, Salah, Firmino.
Sevilla: Sergio Rico, Mercado, Geis, Lenglet, Escudero, Pizarro, Nzonzi, Banega, Sarabia, Nolito, Ben Yedder.
He has been in scintillating form for the Reds so far, but Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been tipped to leave Anfield for Real Madrid by former Tottenham forward Mido.
The Egyptian posted on Twitter: "Congratulations to @22mosalah on becoming the most Egyptian to Score goals in Europe and still got plenty to come!!remember when the Liverpool fans made fun of me when I said 3 years ago that Salah is 10 times better thn Sterling..well now they know I was right !!keep going son!!
"@22mosalah got the mentality to keep playing at the top level for many years and this is what we were all Egyptians r missing when we had the chance to play in Europe..I believe that Salah will not stay for long at @LFC !!soon he will be gone to @realmadriden #HalaMadrid,"
Liverpool have already fended off one Spanish giant who took a liking to one of their star attackers, they won't want to go through it again.
With a few defensive injuries and a number of impressive attackers on show, the match at the Sanchez Pizjuan certainly offers the promise of goals.
Salah, Coutinho and Firmino have scored nine goals between them in the group stage so far, and you wouldn't bet against them improving that tally tonight.
No Daniel Sturridge in Liverpool's starting line-up - the forward only makes the bench.
Rumours have been circulating around the striker, who is open to leaving Anfield in order to receive regular game-time ahead of the World Cup, and Reds legend Phil Thompson would understand if the former Chelsea star decided to seek pastures new.
"If I was Jurgen Klopp I'd want him to stay but I understand Sturridge wanting to go. He will not go to the World Cup if he continues within the current squad status," Thompson told Sky Sports.
"As a Liverpool fan, I want to see our squad remain together because it isn't that big as it is and he does enhance it. However, on a personal side, having been a player, I'd be worried his chance is passing him by.
"This could maybe be his last World Cup, and when you look at the players who are in that squad, he can still have a major say if he can get back in there. He must be thinking he could play a part this summer.
"I think he'll want to play more regularly and look at his options in January. He'll look at someone like Jermain Defoe and think there is hope that he can leave and get back into the squad."
Sevilla are without first-choice centre-back Kjaer, so Geis partners the impressive Lenglet in the heart of defence. Former Premier League star N'Zonzi will patrol the midfield alongside Pizarro and Banega, while Nolito and Sarabia will support the productive Ben Yedder, who will be looking to build on his fruitful Champions League campaign.
If this match isn't on your BTTS accumulator, then what is?
Lallana could feature against Sevilla, who boast a formidable home record, but defender Joel Matip will play no part against the Andalusians due to a thigh problem, though Klopp doesn't think the Cameroonian will miss a substantial period of time.
"The squad looks good. They are pretty much all here from the normal squad, apart from Joel. He is in Liverpool and full training, so all good," Klopp said.
"He is good, I think there will be a big chance he will be ready for Saturday, but there was no chance for this game – it was a little bit too quick but it is all good."
Will we see Adam Lallana make his long-awaited return from a thigh problem tonight? The midfielder has been training with the first-team squad for the past seven days, but Klopp is understandably deciding to be cautious.
"He is getting nearer and nearer, but we need him for the rest of the season and not for the next weeks," Klopp told Liverpool's official website. "He is really knocking on the door and it is fantastic that he is back."
Good evening and welcome to IB Times UK's live coverage of Sevilla vs Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp's side could secure in the last-16 of Europe's premier club competition with a win over the Andalusians tonight, but they will need whipping boys Maribor to pull out all the stops against Lokomotiv Moscow, who drew with the Reds in September.
Securing victory at the Sanchez Pizjuan is not exactly a cakewalk, either; Eduardo Berizzo's side have not tasted defeat at home since losing to Serie A Champions last November.
An arduous task for Liverpool, though may take confidence from their last result away from Anfield in the Champions League - the Reds ran riot in Slovenia, eventually running out 7-0 victors against Maribor.
