Slovenia host England in the second World Cup qualifier in the international break as the Three Lions look to strengthen their hold at the top of the group. A win here would see them go five points clear of their rivals and in a great position before the players go back to their respective clubs.

Where to Watch Live

Kick-off is set for 7:45pm BST. Live coverage of the game will be on ITV 1 and ITV 1 HD.

Overview

The hosts beat Slovakia in the weekend owing to a 74th minute strike by substitute Rok Kronaveter which earned them three crucial points. The result took them level with Scotland and only two points behind the Three Lions.

A win against Gareth Southgate's men will tilt the tide in their favour, leaving England's interim manager with a major task to rebuild. Their win against Slovakia was Srecko Katanec's side's first win since March and they will be looking to carry that momentum forward.

England pulled off a 2-0 win over Malta, despite not making any headlines in the contest. Wayne Rooney kept his place in midfield alongside Jordan Henderson, but the lacklustre performance against the minnows suggests that there is still a lot of ground to cover for them to make it over the line.

On the team front, Ryan Bertrand pulled out of the squad citing injury and has been replaced by Kieran Gibbs, who cut his holiday short to join the squad. Eric Dier is expected to be given a start after missing the last few games for both club and country through injury. In defence, Gary Cahill and John Stones are both expected to start in between Kyle Walker and Danny Rose, with Joe Hart keeping his place between the sticks.

What Managers Say

Srecko Katanec: " [On Rooney] I would not be surprised if he was dropped. Wayne Rooney is a leader of this team, he has the experience a captain needs and it is quite hard to substitute him or leave him out. But it is also true that he is not the youngest any more and maybe his form has taken a little dip."

Gareth Southgate: "Making some really close friends redundant - that's probably as big as you can get. I've got to make decisions which are right for the team and whenever you select a team with England, you're going to leave some guys on the bench that are playing every week in the Premier League for their club. You have to be prepared to do that. That's part and parcel of the job."
