Liverpool have confirmed their skipper Steven Gerrard will leave the club after the end of this season.

The 34-year-old is in the final six months of his contract and has decided not to extend his Anfield stay beyond this campaign. The midfielder came up through the ranks of the Reds' youth setup before breaking into the first team in 1998.

Gerrard has been a favourite at Anfield and Liverpool fans expressed their views on social networking sites after the player confirmed that he will end his time at the Merseyside club later this year.
