A Thai man has been arrested after the death of Stephen Ashton, the 22 year old British tourist who was reportedly killed by stray gunfire on the island of Koh Phangan on New Year's Eve.

City worker Mr Ashton, of South London, is believed to have been caught in the crossfire in a fight between two rival local gangs at the Zoom bar on Haad Rin beach, a spot backpackers flock to for its famous monthly full moon parties.

Thai police are seen here with the suspect, 26 year old Ekkapan Kaewkla. After confiscating his gun, the police general can be seen asking him how much the firearm cost, to which he replies 3,000 Baht, roughly £60. He is expected to be charged with manslaughter.

Mr Ashton's family have said he was an innocent bystander simply enjoying the New Year celebrations and that they are "completely devastated".

British ambassador to Thailand, Mark Kent, said that whilst most people had enjoyable trouble-free holidays, there remained risks to western tourists. He is expected to visit the scene on Thursday.
