After he set himself on fire with his friend Tenzin Khedup on June 20. His friend died of his injuries at the scene.

The two men were protesting against China's continued occupation of Tibet. As it has violently stamped out religious freedom and culture in Tibet under its rule.

China has branded the self-immolators "terrorists" and criminals and has blamed exiled Tibetans and the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, for inciting them. To which The Dalai Lama says he merely seeks greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.
