Trump campaign website does not allow some donors to cancel recurring donations
Trump's website allegedly only offers donors to 'update' their card information with a new card.
Are you a Donald Trump supporter but thinking about switching teams? Too bad, because while Trump supporters may be able to switch ideologies and political affiliations, their credit cards will not be allowed to make the same switch.
According to a report by Mic, Trump campaign donors have allegedly begun popping out of the woodwork, complaining about the fact that the Republican presidential nominee's campaign website does not offer them any way by which to opt out of the recurring donations they previously opted to authorise. The website reportedly only allows donors to "update" their credit card information with a new (valid) card.
The site's major loophole was first spotted after CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond posted a screenshot of an email he received from a disillusioned Trump supporter. The email detailed the unnamed donor claiming that Trump's campaign had not returned voicemail requests he left to cancel contributions.
Apparently, the only way to cancel one's recurring donations is to have first registered an account and created a password. If, however, users had not registered, then it appears they may be doomed to keep making contributions until the Trump campaign corrects the website design flaw.
In comparison, the Clinton campaign's website not only has a clear option for donors to remove their card information, in the confirmation email donors receive, the campaign also acknowledges that the contribution factors in as a recurring donation. On the other hand, the confirmation mail Donald Trump's supporters receive does not clarify about the monthly contributions, neither does it offer any information about how to go about cancelling payments.
Ironically, The Federal Election Commission does not have any specific rules about recurring campaign donations and the cancellation procedures. "Our regulations do not speak specifically to that issue," said spokesperson Christian Hilland. He also added, that an investigation would only be triggered in the event that the total amount tallied from a recurring contribution exceeded the maximum legal donation amount of $2,700 (£2,064).
