Beloved Golden Retriever Tucker Budzyn Dies From Sudden Intestinal Infection Caused by Successful Chemo

Tucker Budzyn, the beloved golden retriever who became a social media sensation, has died at age eight after a sudden infection developed during treatment for lymphoma.

His owner, Courtney Budzyn, said the infection emerged after Tucker appeared to be responding well to treatment, but his condition deteriorated rapidly despite emergency veterinary care.

Tucker Budzyn Dies Unexpectedly

Courtney announced Tucker's death in an emotional video shared on 5 September, saying the internet's beloved canine had died on 2 September.

She said the eight-year-old had initially been responding well to chemotherapy and had reached partial remission.

In the video, Tucker's owner said: 'I'm so sorry. I thought that was the last sad video I was going to make but it's not. Tucker's gone. I'm so sorry.'

However, Courtney said the family did not initially know that lymphoma had affected Tucker's intestines. She said the treatment had 'left a hole' where the cancer had been in his intestine, and that Tucker subsequently developed an infection that appeared to worsen rapidly.

Tucker was rushed for veterinary treatment after becoming extremely weak. Courtney said he received antibiotics and fluids, but his temperature continued to rise, and his condition did not improve. The family ultimately made the difficult decision to let him go.

Tucker's Lymphoma Diagnosis

Courtney revealed Tucker's lymphoma diagnosis on 30 August, saying he had already begun treatment. At that point, she said he had reached partial remission after about a week and was still swimming, walking and visiting parks.

According to Courtney, Tucker was receiving the CHOP chemotherapy protocol alongside herbal therapies under the care of veterinary oncologist Dr Aaron Banick. Courtney had previously said she was focused on protecting Tucker's quality of life rather than extending his life at any cost.

The sudden deterioration came just days after Courtney publicly revealed Tucker's diagnosis, turning what had initially appeared to be a hopeful treatment update into devastating news.

Final Weeks With His Family

Despite his illness, Tucker's final weeks were filled with many of his favourite activities. Courtney said he visited parks, went swimming, wrestled with his son, Todd, rolled in the grass and went rollerblading with her for the final time.

She also described giving him chicken with his medicine twice a day, saying he was excited about the meals.

In her tribute, Courtney reflected on the profound bond she shared with Tucker, describing him as 'part of my soul' and saying, 'He literally saved my life.' As she grieved his loss, Courtney said she had to keep moving forward, heal and take care of Todd.

Courtney explained why she chose to share the details of Tucker's death, saying: 'I feel like I owe it to you guys to tell you what happened without you wondering because he's yours too.'

Tucker Budzyn's Legacy

Tucker was adopted by Courtney in 2018 and became one of the internet's best-known dogs through videos showcasing his expressive personality.

He built a huge international audience, with millions of followers across social media platforms. His videos documented everyday moments, including meals, playtime and outings with his family.

His death has since prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans across social media. A children's picture book featuring Tucker, titled Of All the Sniffs I Love the Most, remains scheduled for release in November 2026.

Courtney said Tucker's death had left her feeling as though she had 'lost a body part', while thanking the online community that had followed his life.
