UEFA Champions League: Barcelona fans demand Luis Suarez to be benched
Dortmund produced multiple opportunities but Ter Stegen's brilliant goalkeeping helped Barca return to Camp Nou unbeaten
Barcelona started their UEFA Champions League campaign in Germany in an away match against Borussia Dortmund which ended in a draw. The Ernesto Valverde-led side maintained most of the ball possession throughout the match in the Signal Iduna Park. However, the Catalans had to stay content with just a point to their name. At the end of the match, Barca supporters expressed their anger against Luis Suarez, and many of them demanded the Uruguayan star's elimination from the starting lineup.
The Dortmund match marked Suarez's return to the football pitch after recovering from an injury. This match also saw Lionel Messi don the Barca jersey for the first time this season.
There were moments in the match that could have proved beneficial for the German side. For instance, Dortmund's Marco Reus got an opportunity to score from a penalty, which he failed to utilise. Had he put the ball into the net at the right moment, Barca would have returned to Camp Nou with a devastating loss. It was Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, who saved the Spanish club on numerous occasions on his native soil. As reported by the National, Valverde said, "The team overcame a bad moment today, mainly thanks to Ter Stegen."
It always seemed that the Catalans have been facing serious issues while coping with foreign conditions, something that was evident since last season. According to Evening Standard, Suarez looked sluggish throughout the match and he didn't look likely to open his away scoring account, which has been blank for 4 years.
Right now, Group F is squared with Italian side Inter Milan drawing their home game against SK Slavia Prague, 1-1. Barcelona will next face Inter at home on 2nd October. Dortmund will travel to Prague to play against Slavia Prague in their next UCL tie on the same day.
Barcelona won the Champions League for the last time in 2015. Coincidentally, it was also the last time when Suarez scored an away goal for the club. This season, the club is starting the campaign with a long list of injuries and it seems that the fans don't have much patience while waiting for their stars to get back in shape.
