12-Year Old Has Become Britain's Youngest Mum - But is She Youngest in the World?

A 12-year-old girl and her 13-year-old boyfriend have become the youngest parents in Britain following the birth of their baby daughter.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was still in primary school when she conceived. She gave birth to her baby over the weekend and both are said to be in good health.

The parents said they intend to stay together as a family. The girl currently lives with her 27-year-old mother at her home in north London.

A source told The Sun: "The baby's mum and dad have been in a relationship for more than a year, so this isn't a fleeting romance. They intend to stick together and bring their daughter up together."

At 12-years and three months old, the girl is five months older than the previous youngest mother in the UK, Tressa Middleton, who gave birth in 2006.

Despite their young ages, the girls are still relatively older than some of the youngest mothers in history, some of whom gave birth as young as five.

World's youngest Mothers:

1. Lina Medina – Five years and seven months

This young girl from Ticrapo is believed to be the youngest mother in medical history, having given birth to a baby boy via caesarean section in 1939. Her parents originally thought she had a tumour when they took her to a hospital, but was found to be seven months pregnant. Although Medina's father was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse, he was later released due to lack of evidence, and the baby's biological father was never identified.

2. Yelizaveta "Liza" Gryshchenko – Six years

This girl from the part of Soviet Russian now known as Ukraine had only just turned six when she gave birth to a stillborn in 1934. She became pregnant after her grandfather had raped her.

3. "H" – Six years seven months

An Indian girl known only as H gave birth by caesarean in 1972 in Delhi. She was initially admitted to hospital after thinking her pregnancy bump was an abdominal tumour.

4. Unidentified - Eight years

An unknown Indian became one of the youngest mothers of all time after she gave birth in 1933. She unfortunately died during labour, along with her child.

5. Zulma Guadalupe Morales - Eight years

This Mexican mother gave birth to a 7lb boy by caesarean in 1993 at a hospital in Guadalajara, Jalisco. She became pregnant after her uncle raped her.

6. Griseldina Acuña – Eight years two months

The girl from Columbia gave birth aged eight years and two months after reportedly starting to menstruate at just three years old.

7. Mum Zi - Eight years four months

Mum Zi became a mother at eight years and four months in 1884 in Calabar, Nigeria, after being abused as a child sex slave. Her daughter, who also became a sex slave, later gave birth aged eight years and eight months, making Mum Zi a grandmother at just 17

8. Columbian Girl – Eight years five months

An unidentified girl was found by a police officer with a swollen abdomen and was suspected to be smuggling drugs. A scan revealed she was 32-weeks pregnant after being raped by a man employed at her local pharmacy in Ciudad Bolívar. She gave birth in September 2004.

9. 'Anya' – Eight years seven months

This Russian girl gave birth to her 13-year-old neighbour's baby girl in Rostov-on-Don in 2000.

10. Hilda Trujillo – Eight years seven months

Hilda Trujillo gave birth to her daughter María del Rosario in Lima, Peru in 1957. It was originally reported she was nine years old before her true age was revealed as being eight years and seven months. Her 22-year-old cousin who raped her was later arrested.
