58 people in Sheffield want Sesame Street's Elmo as their MP
A man dressed as Elmo from Sesame Street got 58 votes in the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election on 5 May. The New Fathers 4 Justice campaigner Bobby Smith was standing for the Give Me Back Elmo Party in the by-election won by Labour candidate Gill Furniss, who is the widow of the constituency's former MP Harry Harpham.
Smith has been arrested multiple times for protests, including in November when he scaled the roof of Buckingham Palace. Sheffield City Council shared this video of Smith shedding his costume while Furniss addressed voters.
New Fathers 4 Justice is a UK-based direct-action fathers' rights group campaigning for the rights of fathers to see their children. It seeks legal presumption of equal contact for a child with their parents if they split up, and the abolition of the "deeply controversial, undemocratic secret court system that still exists within the 'family' division despite 40 years of inequality and protest," according to its website.
