Actor Jim Carrey hit with wrongful death lawsuit in girlfriend Cathriona White's suicide
Her husband claims Carrey provided depressed girlfriend with drugs with 'predictable results.'
Jim Carrey has been sued for wrongful death in the suicide of his girlfriend. Her husband accuses the actor of illegally obtaining and providing the powerful painkillers she used to kill herself in 2015.
Irish-born makeup artist Cathriona White, 30, was found dead of an overdose of prescription drugs, including Ambien, Propranolol and oxycodone in her Sherman Oaks, California, home. She left a suicide note for Carrey saying: "I'm just not for this world."
White's husband, Mark Burton, who was married to her at the time, charged in his lawsuit that Carrey obtained "these drugs illegally and under a bogus name (Arthur King)," then "proceeded to provide the prescription drugs to ... Cathriona White," despite knowing that White was "prone to depression and had previously attempted to take her own life."
The "result that followed was predictable and foreseeable," states the suit.
The drugs found in White's body all came from three pill bottles found nearby. The bottles had the name Arthur King on them.
Afterward, Carrey tried to "conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability in Ms. White's untimely and tragic death," the document notes.
The suit claims the 54-year-old actor sent a bogus text message to White when she was already dead, pretending he had misplaced the drugs and "insinuating White may have taken them from Carrey without his knowledge, when in reality Carrey knew full well that he had voluntarily and illegally provided" the drugs to White days earlier.
There was no indication how much money the suit was seeking from the actor.
Carrey said in a statement to USA Today: "What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man's lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world.
"I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat's troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone's control."
The couple had broken up just days before White's suicide.
"I've spent 3 days now in disbelief that you're not here," White said in her suicide note to Carrey.
"I can go on brokenhearted and try to put the pieces back. I could, I just don't have the will this time. I'm sorry you felt I wasn't there for you. I tried to give you my best part.
"I don't really know about burial or that sort of thing. You are my family so whatever you choose will be fine. Please forgive me. I'm just not for this world."
White also tweeted just before her death: "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest."
The Dumb And Dumber actor and White first met on a film set in 2012 and were in an on-off relationship until 2015.
"I am shocked and saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona," he said at the time of her death. "She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil."
But he was later angry that the media stalked him for more details about their relationship.
"When I came to Hollywood to make it as a comedian, I soon learned that the details of my private life would be handed out to the media like free dinner vouchers," he said. "I never dreamed that the people I love most in the world would also be on the menu."
