Overview
Afghanistan come into this game after suffering their second defeat in the ongoing Asia Cup Championship against Sri Lanka on Monday. The Lankans set a target of 254 runs for the Afghans to chase. But Mohammad Nabi's side collapsed making a total of 124 runs to give their opponents a 129-run win.
The result awarded the Lankans a bonus point and a place in the final, which is scheduled for the weekend. Mirwais Ashraf nabbed two wickets against Sri Lanka while Shapoor Zadran, Hamza Hotak and Dawlat Zadran added one wicket each to their names in the opening innings.
On the batting front, skipper Nabi was the highest scorer for the Afghans with 37, while their star from the second match, Asghar Stanikzai could only manage 27 runs. They currently have four points on their tally courtesy of the win against Bangladesh and sit fourth in the table behind India due to inferior Net Run-Rate.
India on the other hand suffered a last-over setback in their previous game against Pakistan last Sunday. The world champions scored 245 runs in 50 overs with the loss of eight wickets in their innings.
Rohit Sharma (56), Ambati Rayudu (58) and Ravindra Jadeja (52) were the ones responsible to give India a respectable total with their half-centuries.
However, the Indian bowlers could not arrest Shahid Afridi's late surge in the last over of the innings as the right-handed batsman smashed two sixes to win the game for the defending champions.
Ravichandran Ashwin who had given only 31 runs in the previous nine overs he bowled, conceded 13 runs in the final over of the innings.
However, Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker for India with three while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Amit Mishra nabbed two wickets each.
The result left India in third place with just four points and following Pakistan's win against Bangladesh on Tuesday which helped Misbah-ul-Haq's side book their place in the final, Virat Kohli's side have nothing but pride to play for against Afghanistan.
