Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott lead England fightback against West Indies
England dismissed West Indies for 299 on a day interrupted by rain in day two of the second Test.
Marlon Samuels struck an impressive century for the hosts but England would ease to 74-0 by stumps to take control of the Test.
Weather conditions ensured the tourists started their innings with just over two hours of the day remaining in Grenada, but openers Jonathan Trott and captain Alastair Cook produced a measured performance in the fading light to steer their side into a commanding position.
Stuart Broad finished the day with 4-61, including a fine run of three wickets in 20 balls as West Indies slipped from 188-5 overnight.
Final pair Devendra Bishoo and Shannon Gabriel frustrated however, hitting a combined 52, but under-pressure duo Cook and Trott soon alleviated those nerves, easing to a 37 and 32 to strengthen England's hopes of winning a first away Test since 2012.
There was also a personal milestone for the England skipper as he surpassed Alec Stewart's record of 8463 runs to become England's second highest Test scorer, now only trailing Graham Gooch.
Samuels reached his hundred after 226 deliveries but his day was brought to a halt when he lifted Jimmy Anderson's delivery straight into the grateful arms of Ian Bell at second slip.
Up stepped Broad then, who found his range quickly, dismissing Denish Ramdin for 31 after he edged to Jos Buttler. Jason Holder, who tormented England on the final day of the first Test last week, soon followed, as did Kemar Roach to leave the hosts stranded on 279 for 9.
Bishoo (20) and Gabriel (30) restored some rhythm in the West Indies batting order before Moeen Ali broke the partnership.
Cook and Trott's comfortable 74 left England in a commanding position ahead of Thursday.
