Alicia Vikander to join James McAvoy for romantic thriller Submergence
She's already appeared in five films released in 2015: Ex Machina, Seventh Son, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, Burnt and the upcoming The Danish Girl with Eddie Redmayne, which is already receiving strong awards buzz. Add those to the three 2014-released films she featured in – starting with Testament Of Youth, where she played Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington's love interest – and it's clear that Alicia Vikander is fast becoming Hollywood's hottest property.
But she seems in no rush to slow down, as the up-and-coming Swedish actress looks to land herself a role opposite James McAvoy. Vikander is reportedly being in final negotiations to appear in his next film, the romantic thriller Submergence.
Based on JM Ledgard's novel of the same name and adapted for the screen by The Last Face's Erin Dignam, the film will centre on two lovers who are each facing life-threatening situations of their own. One is held captive by jihadist Somalians (McAvoy) and the other (Vikander) is a diver exploring the depths of the ocean in a submersible. Each of them deals with their testing times by finding solace in their romantic memories of the other.
German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Wings Of Desire) has been lined up to direct, while Cameron Lamb will produce through Lila 9th Productions and Paris-based Backup Media is providing finance. The French company's credits include the hit television series The Returned as well as the films Amour, Only God Forgives and the Oscar-winning Still Alice, starring Julianne Moore. Submergence is slated to start shooting in March 2016 in Europe and Africa.
Before Submergence will even begin production however, McAvoy can be seen in the horror-action-fantasy Victor Frankenstein alongside Daniel Radcliffe and the eagerly-anticipated X-Men: Apocalypse opposite Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. Meanwhile, Vikander has just completed work on romance drama Tulip Fever with Christoph Waltz and is currently filming the untitled Jason Bourne sequel opposite Matt Damon.
