Android Nougat's final developer preview rolled out, hints at possible September launch
The Android N developer version can be tried out by enrolling for the Beta program.
Google has released the final developer preview of the Android 7.0 Nougat OS which will be followed soon by the final OTA public version. Given tech giant's previous launch patterns a possible September release can be expected for the Android N.
The latest preview is the fifth and final testing version of the Android N. Google has always encouraged developers as well as public testers to test their OS and apps running on this OS to eradicate any bugs before the final release.
The company listed on its blog the major highlights of the final version of the developer preview of Android N:
- System images for Nexus and other preview devices
- An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they're ready
- The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviors and UI
- The latest bug fixes and optimizations across the system and in preinstalled apps
Apart from this the DP5 also features an updated Easter Egg. To make this work tap the 'N' on the Easter Egg screen which will cycle through a series of emoji. The 'N' will additionally drop the purple-blue colours for a more faded beige that matches the colour of nougat bars.
Google has been rather swift with Android N's roll out starting from the first developer version which was unveiled in March and much to everyone's surprise was a rather low-profile announcement. Google, however, stepped things up at the Google I/O 2016 when it gave a detailed and demonstrative look into Android N and shortly afterwards revealed the official name for the OS calling it Android Nougat.
Among major features Android N brings a split screen mode, a notification panel redesign and additions to Doze power saving. Currently the Google Play Store is already accepting apps targeting Android N so that developers are encouraged to publish their Android N apps well before the OS releases in order to have smooth user experience once they download the OTA version.
To download the latest preview version if you are enrolled in the Android Beta program, the update will reflect right away. In case you have not enrolled yet, Android Beta site and opt-in for your Android phone or tablet. At the moment the Nougat Developer Preview is available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices, as well as General Mobile 4G [Android One] devices. Meanwhile lot of manufacturers like Samsung and HTC have announced their eligible handsets slated to receive the Android N update.
