Overview
Andy Murray came through in a convincing fashion as he began his Rome Masters campaign with a win over Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round as he continues his preparation for the upcoming French Open. The Briton dropped one ranking place after he failed to defend his Madrid Open title but is still seeded number two at the tournament. It could hamper him when the draws for the second Grand Slam of the year are made later this week.
The world number three is also coming off a fresh break up after splitting with his coach Amelie Mauresmo. Murray has indicated that he will not make an appointment before the French Open, which could see assistant coach Jamie Delgado taking over until a new head coach is appointed.
Jeremy Chardy has achieved his best run in a Master Series event thus far this season but will face an uphill task to overcome the in-form Murray. The Frenchman is having a less than impressive season and is yet to add to his single ATP title thus far on tour.
