Arda Turan misses Barcelona training ahead of Copa del Rey final but Javier Mascherano features
Barcelona have revealed that Arda Turan was granted special permission to miss a training session on Tuesday (17 May 2016) as the new La Liga champions began the preparation ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla on Sunday (22 May). Javier Mascherano, however, provided a boost to manager Luis Enrique after the Argentinian completed the workout with the rest of his teammates despite ending the weekend victory over Granada with some muscular problems.
The Catalans revalidated the La Liga title on Saturday after beating Granada 3-0 thanks to a Luis Suarez hat-trick, finishing one point ahead of Real Madrid and three points ahead of Atlético Madrid. The squad celebrated the title with a parade through the street of Barcelona on Sunday before enjoying a day off on Monday.
But with the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla to be played at the Vicente Calderón on Sunday, the Barcelona players returned to training on Tuesday with the only major absentee being Turan.
"Barca manager Luis Enrique kept a watchful eye on the field, where all available first-team players worked out, plus the reserve player Juan Cámara. Midfielder Arda Turan was granted permission to miss the session for personal reasons," Barcelona announced on the club's website.
Mascherano was forced to be replaced by Jeremy Mathieu in the 75th minute of the game against Granada after he picked a muscular injury.
However, it appeared likely that the former Liverpool star would be ready to play his part in the Copa del Rey final after he trained with the rest of the group on Tuesday. Luis Enrique is thus expected to have his XI gala ready to try to finish the season with the double of La Liga and Copa del Rey, with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar leading the attack.
Luis Enrique's men are to return to training on Wednesday (18 May) and it remains to be seen whether Turan would be available.
One way or another, his potential absence against Sevilla would not disrupt much Luis Enrique's plans for the final as the former Atlético Madrid star is not expected to make the line-up. The club are yet to update on the injury situation of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and long-term absentee Sandro Ramirez. Yet, as it the case of Turan, they would not make the Barcelona XI anyway as Marc Andre Ter Stegen is the first choice for the cup competition.
Sevilla, meanwhile, would have fewer days to prepare for the game as they have the UEFA Europa League Final to play against Liverpool on Wednesday night.
