Overview

The only South American team remaining in the tournament, the Argentina men's hockey team, created history by reaching their first semi-final at the Olympics. The team comes into this clash full of confidence, beating Spain 2-1 in the quarter-final.

Goals from Gonzalo Peillat and Juan Gilardi helped Argentina win the game and progress to the semi-finals, a stage they were not expected to reach at the start of the tournament. In Matias Paredes, they have arguably the standout forward of the competition, while Matias Rey and Lucas Rossi have given him good support from the midfield.

The Lions, as they are known, are the underdogs on 16 August and despite their impressive form are unlikely to cause an upset against hockey giants Germany.

The defending Olympic champions Germany suffered a scare in their quarter-final game against New Zealand, trailing by two goals to eventually win 3-2. Despite going behind twice, the Germans did not panic and goals from Moritz Furste (2) and Florian Fuchs helped them reach their fourth consecutive semi-final at the summer games.

It was a rare sight to see the Europeans trail by two goals, considering they are a very efficient side who play the perfect game both in defence and attack. Germany come into this clash as the favourites to win and are too talented and experienced to throw it away at this important stage of the tournament.
