Arjen Robben backs Manchester United's underperforming winger Memphis Depay to come good
Arjen Robben thinks Memphis Depay deserves to be given more time at Manchester United. The 22-year-old Dutchman has struggled since he joined the Red Devils last summer, but his international teammate has backed Depay to come good if the club show patience with him.
Depay has scored just five goals in 41 games in England, and has recently been linked with a move away from the Old Trafford club. But Robben, who played for Chelsea earlier in his career, thinks Depay has what it takes to become a success at United.
"He's a very talented player, but you can't underestimate how big a step it is up to the Premier League, and especially to a big club like Man United," Robben said of the United midfielder, according to Match of the Day magazine.
"He's still very young – you have to give him some time. The talent is there – he's got everything that he needs to be a success in England."
Depay has found himself on the periphery of the United first-team in recent weeks, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard being preferred ahead of him. However, the Dutchman – who joined United from PSV Eindhoven last summer for a reported fee of £25m ($36.3m) – has persistently said he will work hard to make a success of his time in England.
"I'm in a new club right now, it's a different level [to the Eredivisie]," he admitted previously. "Such things are playing a big role and you're trying to find your way and it was a bit easy at the start but then I fell back and you could see it in the way I played.
"But you can assume that I'm busy with working on that and getting back to the top. I feel fit and I'm trying to show on the training ground that I'm doing my best to perform well. People are used to seeing me score and that shall also come, it just takes a bit longer now but you'll have to find that form again."
