Arsenal See Basel Centre-Back as Answer to Defensive Problems – Report
Arsenal are interested in signing FC Basel centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic as Arsene Wenger looks to solve the defensive issues that have plagued his side all season.
With former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein insisting that Wenger will have major funds to spend in the summer, it seems one of the priorities for the Frenchman is to sign at least one new central defender.
Dragovic has impressed for the Swiss outfit this season and has played a major role in helping the club top the table and reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
The 22-year-old played in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham last week at White Hart Lane and will be hoping to keep a clean sheet in the second leg that would see the Swiss side progress.
Arsenal may well have taken the opportunity to watch the defender against their bitter rivals, as the Daily Express claims that they are now prepared to make an offer for Dragovic during the summer.
However, it seems it will not be easy to land the talented defender as there is believed to be interest from AC Milan and Zenit St. Petersburg who both look certain to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Arsenal are still battling with Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton for a place in the top four and it would be a major plus for Wenger if he could promise Champions League football to prospective new signings.
Dragovic has previously played in Europe's elite competition and was a member of the side that defeated Manchester United last season and stopped the Premier League club from advancing from the group stages.
With two league titles already under his belt, and with international experience for Austria, Dragovic would certainly be an attractive prospect for Wenger who has struggled to find a first choice central defensive partnership this season.
Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelean have all come in for criticism throughout the season and it seems Wenger is now keen to add more competition during the summer.
