Arsenal and Tottenham Eye Move for Liverpool Defender Daniel Agger
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are set for a summer battle to sign Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, reports the Mirror.
The 29-year-old made only 16 starts in the Premier League last season. The Denmark international's poor form and injuries saw Brendan Rodgers preferring Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho in the heart of the Reds's back four.
Skrtel and Sakho have been impressive for the Merseyside club in the previous campaign. The former Swansea manager has signed Dejan Lovren from Southampton and the arrival of the Croatian centre-back has seen Agger drop further down the pecking order.
The Gunners allowed Thomas Vermaelen to join Barcelona as the former Arsenal skipper completed his move to Camp Nou on Sunday.
Arsene Wenger is left with Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and summer signing Calum Chambers as the only recognised centre-backs in the squad.
The French manager has set his sights on Agger as he looks to further strengthen Arsenal's back four for the new season.
Wenger thanked Vermaelen and admitted the Emirates club will sign a central defender this summer.
"Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year – I am grateful for him and I wish him very well. If I can find another centre-back, I will do it. You make your position with your performances," Wenger explained.
Meanwhile, Arsenal's neighbours and arch-rivals Tottenham are also monitoring Agger's situation at Anfield.
Mauricio Pochettino's side could make an approach to sign the Premier League defender, if they fail to land Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio.
The Mirror also reports, Arsenal and Tottenham could face competition from West Ham United in signing Agger in the ongoing transfer window.
Meanwhile, Rodgers has admitted the Reds's star player is recovering from injury and Liverpool have not received any offer for Agger's services.
"I've seen some stories on that but, no, we haven't had any enquiries. Dan's still getting some work done on his knee, he's been a bit unfortunate since America. He's still getting treatment but we haven't had anything, no offers," Sky Sports quoted Rodgers as saying.
