Wenger to Continue Policy of Recruiting Germans with Moves for Dortmund and Schalke Stars - Report
Arsenal are reportedly tracking Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus and Schalke's Julian Draxler, as Arsene Wenger considers making moves for the Germany duo in the near future.
The Gunners have been linked to both players for some time now but ended up signing their more decorated compatriot Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a club record deal on transfer deadline day. However, according to the Express, Wenger is now planning to revive the club's pursuit of Reus and Draxler.
The French tactician wanted to sign a forward in the summer but missed out on both Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez. A deadline day loan approach for Chelsea's Demba Ba also failed to materialise leaving Olivier Giroud and the currently-sidelined Lukas Podolski as the only senior, established players left in Arsenal's ranks, for the central striker role.
Reus has been a long-time target for the Gunners, with Wenger being an ardent admirer of the player's talent. The 24-year-old can operate anywhere across the frontline and also as an attacking midfielder. The in-form Giroud had recently stated a versatile forward, in the mould of Suarez, would complement him and be a better option for Arsenal, than signing a genuinely out-and-out like Higuain.
Reus is understood to have a £34m release clause in his Dortmund contract. The player notched 14 goals and nine assists from 32 Bundesliga appearances for the Borussians last season and has got off to a good start this term as well.
Meanwhile, Draxler was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal late in the summer window, till the Gunners snapped up Ozil. However, Wenger could still retrun for the 20-year-old, who is now regarded as one of the very best talents to have emerged from Europe of late.
The youngster had signed a long-term contract with Schalke earlier this summer but the Bundesliga club is open to selling him, if a significant offer arrives. Juventus has also been recently credited with an interest in Draxler, who is valued at over £30m.
Arsenal already have five Germans in their squad, with academy stars Serge Gnabry and Gedion Zelalem joining Ozil, Podolski and Per Mertesacker.
