Vernon Philander took 5/21 for South Africa to bowl out the hosts for 85 in the first innings of the second Test at Hobart getty

Australia's batting has been poor off late and their batsmen struggled once again in the second Test as they collapsed to 85 all-out in the first innings at Hobart. Skipper Steve Smith was the only batsman to put up a fight, remaining unbeaten at 48 while the rest of the players around him fell like nine pins.

This is the third instance in the last five years that the batting unit has collapsed, following their humiliating 47 all-out in Cape Town in 2011 and 60 all-out against England in Nottingham last year. Vernon Philander and Kyle Abbott were the seamers who did all the damage, with Philander taking five wickets for 21 runs while Abbott ended with figures of three for 41.

What was even more humiliating is that while the other collapses came away from home, this happened at a venue where they are used to the conditions being the home team.

Twitter users went into frenzy post the collapse, we at IBTimes UK look at some of the best tweets on Australia's drastic innings.

In other news, Australia bowled out for 85! Forget turning wickets, now the Aussies can't play on green wickets either! #AUSvSA

Australia's only shorter home Test innings than this in the post-war era was v Marshall/Holding/Garner at the WACA. #AUSvSA

All out for 85 in challenging but not by any means impossible conditions! #AUSvSA

If you're new to cricket, 85 is a decent score. Not for an entire team of course but an individual. #AUSvSA

You call this a collapse? Australia were 9-21 in Cape Town in 2011. This is nothing. #AUSvSA

Always a nice feeling to know you have avoided the follow-on before you even start your innings #AUSvSA #85AllOut @OfficialCSA @CAComms
