Overview

Raonic presided over a thriller with former Champion Wawrinka which lasted five sets to book his place in the quarters. Raonic won the first two sets with consummate ease but Wawrinka came back to square the game by winning he next two and taking the match to the fifth and final set.

Raonic hit 24 aces and 82 winners in the game and proved too difficult for Wawrinka, who lost the game 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3. The Canadian attributed the win to self-belief while Wawrinka revealed that he was down with a cold for the last 10 days

Monfils, on the other hand, is known for his flashy brand of tennis, which has been a highlight of his play over the last four rounds. Seeded 23, the Frenchman defeated Russia's Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in two hours and 37 minutes, firing in 44 winners and 14 aces in the process.

This is the first time that Monfils will take the stage in the quarter-finals in 11 attempts thus far, only second to countryman Fabrice Santoro, who needed three more attempts before breaking past the fourth round. This would be his seventh Grand Slam quarter-final appearance, four times in the French Open and two in the US Open.
