Overview

Wawrinka made his way into the third round after a well fought win over Radek Stepanek in the second round, defeating the Czech Republican 6-2 6-3 6-4. The number five seed was hardly troubled in the entire game, which is testament to the confidence with which he overpowered his opponent, but faced some hurdles in the third and final set when Stepanek fought back to take the game to the wire.

Warinka's win thwarted Stepanek's bid to move to the third round for the first time in eight consecutive attempts. Should Stepanek have prevailed, the 37-year-old would become the oldest player to make his way into the third round since Jimmy Connors in 1991. He used a novel serve and volley mechanism to try to overcome Wawrinka but the 30-year-old was equal to the task and overcame the challenge quite easily.

Meanwhile, unseeded Lukas Rosol got the better of 25th seed Jack Sock to make his way into the third round. The American was nursing an ankle injury before the game and was unable to match the exuberance of Rosol, who came out on top in three sets, 6-7 6-7 3-6. Rosol won the first two sets via tiebreakers but it was Sock's inability to take his chances that cost him the game, failing to take any of his 10 break points that were on offer.
