A couple in Texas were horrified when they discovered that a stranger had hacked into their baby monitor to spy on and insult their two-year-old daughter.

Marc Gilbert told of how he heard a man's voice while he was in the kitchen of his home in Harris County.

He then realised that the voice was coming from the baby monitor in his daughter Allyson's bedroom. The monitor was also equipped with a camera.

Gilbert told ABC News that he heard the voice calling his toddler a "f*****g moron" and telling her to "wake up you little slut".

When Gilbert and his wife Lauren went to investigate, the camera turned towards them and the stranger's voice called him a "stupid moron" and his wife a "bitch".

He added that the stranger was able to call his daughter by name because he could see it through the camera written on the wall behind her bed.

Gilbert disconnected the monitor from the wall. "It felt like somebody broke into our house," said Gilbert.

He said his daughter's deafness meant that she would not have heard the abuse.

"It's somewhat of a blessing," he said. "If she had heard it, it would have been a big problem."

He believed the monitor was accessed after his home internet router was hacked intol.

"As a father, I'm supposed to protect her against people like this. So it's a little embarrassing but it's not going to happen again.

"I don't think the monitor will ever be connected again. We are going to go without the baby monitor now."
