  • La Liga giants have agreed to pay €35m plus €20m fee on add-ons.
  • Catalans will pay an extra fee of €15m should the former Benfica star win the award several times.
  • The 22-year-old midfielder will be presented on Wednesday.
  • Real Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester United were also interested in his signing.

Barcelona have revealed that the transfer of Andre Gomes from Valencia could cost up to €70m (£58.6m, $76.8m), due to a number of clauses included in the contract with Los Che. The La Liga giants have agreed to pay a set amount of €35m to sign the Portugal international, but the deal also includes €20m in add-ons. Furthermore, they would pay an extra fee of €15m should the 22-year-old midfielder win the Ballon d'Or more than once.

Gomes was one of the most sought-after players in the current transfer window after reports linked him with Chelsea, Manchester United, Juventus, Barcelona themselves and, most frequently, Real Madrid.

Sky Sports, earlier in the summer, reported that Valencia had turned down an initial transfer proposal from Chelsea worth £32m for the player.

As recently as last week, Marca claimed that Los Blancos were ready to win the battle for his services in deal worth around €50m plus performance-related add-ons, after Zinedine Zidane had identified him as the perfect alternative to Paul Pogba, with the Juventus star seemingly out of their reach.

But on 21 July Barcelona surprised all after revealing they had reached a formal agreement with Valencia for the transfer of the Portugal international to make him their fourth signing of the summer, following the previous additions of Denis Suárez, Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne.

Barcelona failed to disclose the terms of the agreement at the time but have now revealed that the transfer could be worth up to €70m due to various add-ons.

"As part of the transaction, FC Barcelona will pay Gomes's former club, Valencia CF, €35m plus up to €20m more depending on the performance of both the player and the team," the club have confirmed through an official statement. "Gomes's contract with Barça will also include incentives worth up to €15m should he win multiple Ballon d'Or awards. The buy-out clause in Gomes's contract has been set at €100m."

Furthermore, the La Liga giants have confirmed that the former Valencia and Benfica star has signed a five-year deal and will be unveiled as new Barcelona player on Wednesday.

"FC Barcelona's newest player, André Gomes, will sign with the team on Wednesday morning, followed by an official presentation at the Miniestadi," they added. "The 22-year-old midfielder, who won the European Championship with the Portugal national team this summer, will agree to a five-year deal."
