KEY POINTS

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic poised to make first appearance for the club.
  • Adnan Januzaj, Chris Smalling, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Andreas Pereira also omitted.
  • United take on Turkish giants in Gothenburg on Saturday.

Bastian Schweinsteiger and Adnan Januzaj are among the notable names absent from the Manchester United squad travelling to Gothenburg for their preseason clash with Galatasaray on Saturday (30 July).

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been named in a United squad for the first time while Matteo Darmian, Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin return after their extended summer breaks. Captain Wayne Rooney is also set to make his first appearance under Jose Mourinho.

But Schweinsteiger, who on Friday announced his retirement from international football, will not make the trip, along with Chris Smalling also remaining in Manchester.

Januzaj also misses out despite having come off the bench in previous friendlies against Wigan Athletic and Borussia Dortmund. Andreas Pereira, who scored in the 2-0 win over the Latics is also absent while James Wilson also stays at home having also failed to make the travelling squad for the tour of China.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson also miss out. Borthwick-Jackson, who has been struggling with a groin strain, could now leave the club on loan, according to the Manchester Evening News who also suggest Fosu-Mensah has suffered a calf injury which rules him out of the Saturday's game.

Despite his hugely impressive cameos last season, the 18-year-old Dutchman is one of clutch of players who Mourinho has reportedly told can leave the club. The Daily Mail claim Fosu-Mensah Borthwick-Jackson, Schweinsteiger, Pereira, Januzaj, James Wilson, Will Keane, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett have all been told they can leave, although some of those will only be loan departures.

Guillermo Varela became the first player of the Mourinho era to leave United when he joined Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan last season.

With a host of players set to leave, United appear to be edging ever closer to sealing what will be a world record move for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
