Overview
The gold medal match of the men's hockey tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympics will see two teams that were not expected to make it to the final. The Belgians came into this tournament known as the most fearless and attacking team in hockey and they have lived up to that reputation, scoring the highest number of goals in the group stages.
Their attacking play was also on display in the semi-final against the Netherlands, who they demolished 3-1. Jerome Truyens, John-John Dohmen and Florent van Aubel, got on the scoresheet to give the European side a win and a place in the final for the first time in 96 years.
With the Dutch out of the way, the Belgians will know that if they play to potential they have all the chances of creating history and winning their first hockey gold since 1920.
Argentina come into the clash after thrashing defending Olympic champions Germany 5-2 in the semi-final. Gonzalo Peillat was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick, all his goals coming from penalty corners. The South Americans, just like their opponents, created history, reaching the final at the Olympic event for the first time.
