Black Friday is almost upon us but for some retailers the sales have already begun. Currys PC World has announced its "Black Tag Event", with deals on televisions, laptops, tablets, smartphones, cameras, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, headphones, wearables and other gadgets.

Falling on the last Friday of November, Black Friday was originally established in the US to capitalise on shoppers' intent to begin Christmas shopping immediately after Thanksgiving. It also falls just three days before Cyber Monday, another major shopping event that was coined as a marketing term for the first Monday after the last payday before Christmas.

The popularity of Black Friday sales in 2014 resulted in issues with the websites of Currys and other several other major retailers in the UK, as significant traffic overloaded servers. Visitors to the Currys and PC World website in the build up to Black Friday last year were forced to wait on a holding page online before being able to browse the best deals.

Best Black Friday deals online

Despite the virtual queues, a large proportion of shoppers are expected to seek out deals online rather than in store. "With this week's Black Friday predicted to break the £1bn ($1.5bn) sales barrier for the first time, it has become the most important day of the year for retailers," said Julien Hervouët, CEO and founder of iAdvize.

"However, at the same time it is one of the most stressful days for businesses and customers alike. Long queues and overcrowded stores are no one's idea of a great shopping experience.

"Staying at home on Black Friday may be the smartest move given that the best deals can be found online. Not only this, customers see at first glance which items are still available and this saves them a tremendous amount of time."
