Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's latest film Dangal is on its way to breaking records after making a smashing entry on the international box office. Since its release on 23 December in India, the sports biopic grossed $19.5m (£15.8m) across India and an additional $11.4m (£9.28m) in international collections based on the latest collection numbers. It released in the UK on 22 December and in the US on 21 December.
According to Deadline,Dangal co-produced by Disney India and Aamir Khan Productions, has already set a record for the biggest Bollywood opening frame ever in North America at $5.13m (£4.18m) since its release last Wednesday.
Directed and co-written by Nitesh Tiwari, the Hindi-language sports film is based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat played by Aamir Khan who taught his daughters Geeta Phogat (Fatema Sana Shaikh) and Babita Kumari (Sanya Malhotra) to wrestle.
Geeta went on to become India's first female wrestler to win at the 2010 Commonwealth Games while Babita took home the silver. Dangal literally translates to 'a wrestling competition'.

With no other big releases slotted for the next few weeks, Dangal is expected to continue its winning streak. It is the second movie this year to make it into the coveted Rs 100 crore ($14.7m) club in its first three days. The only other film to do so was Salman Khan-starrer Sultan, which coincidently was also wrestling-themed. The film grossed Rs 300.45 crore ($45.16m), and went on to become the top earning film of 2016 in India.
Domestic box office analyst Taran Adarsh has predicted that Aamir Khan's film could also go on to cross the Rs 300-crore mark in the next few weeks.
