BT broadband offline for second day as BT.com also grinds to a halt
Thousands of customers across the UK wake up to find their BT internet is broken for the second day running
UPDATE:
13:45: BT says most of its broadband service is now fixed and has issued the following statement:
"We apologise to those BT customers who had problems connecting to some internet services this morning. Internet usage is now back to normal for consumer and small business customers. A small number of larger businesses may still be experiencing some limited internet access. Engineers should have these fixed soon.
"The issue, which affected BT and other providers, was due to Telehouse North, one of our internet connection partners in the docklands, suffering power issues. The issue affected less than five percent of our customers' internet usage, and BT took immediate action to minimise these issues by redirecting traffic."
UPDATE:
11:30: A statement from Telehouse North , a connection partner of BT and Plusnet broadband services, reveals exactly what has caused the second day of internet problems.
In full, it states: "We are aware that there has been an issue with the tripping of a circuit breaker within Telehouse North that has affected a specific and limited group of customers within the building. The problem has been investigated and the solution identified. Our engineers are working with our customers on the resolution right now. We will release updates in due course."
Original story:
BT's entire website is also offline at the time of writing, as frustrated customers vent their anger on Twitter. BT said the first outage, which lasted for several hours, was caused by a 20-minute power cut, but is yet to acknowledge the second blackout.
The website DownDetector, which tracks the status of many popular internet providers, websites and internet services, shows widespread problems in London, as well as BT outages in Birmingham, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool among other towns and cities across the UK.
As with the first outage, the problems today mean some websites do not load properly, or are very slow.
BT's customer support Twitter account, @BTCare, is asking disgruntled customers to check the company's connection status website, which is offline. The account is yet to tweet to its 113,000 followers about the second morning of problems.
The company has said: "A small number of our customers in the areas shown below, may experience a loss of telephone and/or broadband services. We hope to have service restored as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing. Services can be affected by a variety of reasons such as damage caused by 3rd parties or cable theft."
'Substantial power failure'
BT has sent IBTimes UK the following statement, blaming the outage on a "substantial power failure" at a connections partner in East London. The full statement reads: "We're sorry that some BT and Plusnet customers are having problems connecting to some internet services this morning. One of our internet connection partners in the docklands has suffered a substantial power failure. This is affecting BT and other providers. We are redirecting traffic to reduce the impact on customers. Engineers are on site and are fixing the problem."
