Bury: Wanksy artist draws huge phallic symbols to get potholes fixed in home town
Potholes are a menace and everyone hates them. So a graffiti artist describing himself as "Wanksy" has taken the matter into his own hands, pardon the pun, to get them fixed in his hometown of Bury by spray-painting huge penises around the eyesores.
"I wanted to attract attention to the pothole... nothing seemed to do this better than a giant comedy phallus," he said.
"The potholes don't get filled. People will drive over the same pothole and forget about it. They'll be there for months... but you draw something amusing around it, everyone sees it and it either gets reported or fixed," the artist said.
His antics seem to have worked as some have already started to get filled in. But Bury Council has condemned his actions, calling it "incredibly insulting to local residents".
A council spokesman said: "Has this person, for just one second, considered how families with young children must feel when they are confronted with these obscene symbols as they walk to school? Not only is this vandalism, but it's also counter-productive.
"Every penny that we have to spend cleaning off this graffiti is a penny less that we have to spend on actually repairing the potholes. People are entitled to express their grievances to the council, but offending the public and wasting their council tax is not the way to resolve the situation."
But his artwork has caused huge delight on Twitter.
