One of the world's biggest film festivals opened on 16 May, to a glittering display of style and fashion as some of the most beautiful actresses in the world gathered at Cannes, to kick start the 65th edition of the famous event. The festival started with the screening of Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom.

The jury for the 12 day event consists of Italian film maker Nanni Moretti, Diane Kruger, Emmanuelle Devos, Ewan McGregor, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hiam Abbass, Raoul Peck, Andrea Arnold and Alexander Payne.

Kruger wore an elegant aqua silk, one-shoulder draped Giambattista Valli Couture gown and completed her look with silver accessories, while former Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria floated down the red carpet wearing a Marchesa gown, with embroidered mermaid style and a matching Marchesa bejeweled clutch with a quartz clasp. Jessica Chastain, meanwhile, looked gorgeous in a pale pink Alexander McQueen creation with a low-cut neckline. Czech model Eva Herzigova was as graceful as ever in a Dolce & Gabbana dress; the beautiful Lana Del Rey opted for a Alberta Ferretti and the ever-stylish Tilda Swinton was in a Haider Ackermann gown. Finally, Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto came in a Michael Angel strapless dress with a multi-coloured crystallised bodice and pink draped skirt with a thigh-high split. She paired that with shimmering silver Louis Vuitton platform sandals.

The show stealer, however, was 74 year old Jane Fonda who sizzled in a Atelier Versace Fall 2011 gown and coupled it with a metallic Versace clutch, Chopard jewels and peep-toe heels.

With every year, the festival turns glitzier and more filled with glamour.

Last year, for example, The Notebook star Rachel McAdams looked stunning in a sheer red Marchesa outfit and Uma Thurman no less beautiful in a white-hot Fall 2011 Versace. Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing impressed with an Oriental style strapless gown, while actress Salma Hayek opted for Gucci Premiere and Karolina Kurkova arrived in Armani Prive shimmering gown.
