Cardiff hit and run killer due in court today
Police have named the 31 year old man charged over the murder of Karina Menzies on Friday in a hit and run attack as Matthew Tvrdon. He is charged with murder and 13 counts of attempted murder. He is also charged with four counts of assault and dangerous driving. And he is due to appear from custody at Cardiff Magistrates' Court this morning
Hundreds of people gathered yesterday, at the Church of the Resurrection in Ely to pay tribute to mother of three Karina Menzies, who was killed on Friday as she bravely jumped in front of a speeding van, to save her two children as they were walking back from school.
Karina Menzies was one of 14 victims of a series of hit-and-run attacks, in five collisions in different locations in Cardiff, which also left 13 others injured. Two of the injured adults are in a critical condition and five children are also receiving treatment. Eyewitnesses reported the pedestrians were being deliberately being targeted by someone driving a van.
Ms Menzies' brother, Craig Menzies, told BBC Radio 5 Live that she died trying to save the lives of her children. Describing the moment the van careered towards them, he said: "He went through the traffic, aimed for them and then just hit them head on."She just screamed and threw them out of the way as much as she could. He still clipped them but she took it head-on. She saved their lives."
Police are appealing for information about a mystery black car seen driving on the wrong side of the road shortly before the crashes and establishing who owns the white van.
