Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid at the eighth time of asking this season thanks to Javier Hernandez's late winner. It was bad-tempered, scrappy, and downright ugly at times this evening, but a wonderful passage of play involving Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez, finished off by the Mexico international, has sealed Real's place in the final four and keeps them in contention for back to back Champions League's.

Monaco and Juventus meanwhile finished goalless, meaning the Bianconeri join a rather tasty line up for the semi-finals.

FULL TIME:

Monaco 0-0 Juventus (0-1 on aggregate)

Juventus and Real Madrid join Barcelona and Bayern Munich in Champions League semi-finals.

FULL TIME:

Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid (1-0 on aggregate)

Real are running down the clock as Atletico desperately try to fling the ball into the box. They are almost out of time...

Five minutes of time added on at the Bernabeu.

Hernandez has done so much running he can barely walk after scoring and Carlo Ancelotti will make the change, bringing on Jese for the goalscorer.

Seconds again, Hernandez was under a pile of Real Madrid players celebrating his side's goal. Now, he's buried under Atletico players, who try to drag the Mexican to his feet having gone down with a cramp.

Real have their lead! Ronaldo bursts down the inside right, cutting inside to play a one two with Rodriguez. The return into the path of Ronaldo is perfect, and he has the chance to take on the shot from a difficult angle. Instead, he prods the ball across goal for Hernandez, who taps home in the dying minutes!

Goal! Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid (Javier Hernandez, 87)

Jose Maria Gimenez comes on for Tiago, three centre halves now on the pitch for Atletico. Isco now goes down just inside the box having tried to stride past Juanfran, but the referee isn't interested in his appeals.

Oblak makes his first mistake of this fixture and flaps at a Real cross under no pressure to concede a corner. Pepe prods it towards goal as it comes in but it goes wide via a deflection. Or did it? The ref looks to have awarded Atletico a goal kick.

From the resulting corner, Isco cuts inside from the left and looked to bend one for the top corner, but he got it all wrong and skied a woeful effort.

Another chance goes begging for Real! Ronaldo, down the inside right, prods the ball into Hernandez inside the box who has Godin all over him. He does superbly to shrug off the challenge and tries to find the far bottom corner, but his effort his palmed wide by Oblak! Another tremendous save.

Turan strolls off the pitch, eating up as many seconds as he can. His side have 13 minutes until the end of the 90.

Atletico down to 10 men! Arda Turan tries to win a bouncing ball but with his boot raised, catches Ramos. The Real Madrid defender sells it to the referee and a second yellow is brandished.

RED CARD - Arda Turan (Atletico Madrid)

Raul Garcia, not long off the bench, is shown a yellow card and he will miss the next game after a pretty needless foul on Varane.

It was a difficult header for Koke there, to be fair. Mandzukic was behind him calling for a knock on but unless the Spaniard has eyes in the back of his head, there was no one he would have seen him.

Hernandez is dispossessed and Atletico come down the right with Turan and Juanfran exchanging passes. Turan swivels inside and lifts a cross into the box with Koke ghosting into the box, but he nods it straight at Casillas! Wonderful chance for the away side.

Ronaldo screws a shot wide from a difficult angle and looks to have hurt his knee in the process.

Change for Atletico as Antoine Griezmann makes way for Raul Garcia.

Another half chance for Real. Ronaldo pulls out to the left, draws his man in before shifting the ball and whipping another superb cross into the six yard area. Ramos can plant a header on goal, but he gets no direction on it and again it is straight at Oblak.

Varane meets the corner with a terrific leap but powers his header down into the ground, allowing Oblak to easily collect once it bounces up into his arms.

Ronaldo pings a fine cross into the box from out on the left but with Rodriguez lurking, Tiago does the sensible thing and powers clear for another corner.

Hernandez now bravely leaps across goal from a deep position to reach a cross is swatted out of the air by Miranda. Was that a foul? Certainly looked it, but nothing is given.

This time the home side opt to go short, but make a bit of a hash of things. It allows Atletico to regroup and ease the pressure slightly.

Real now pile into the box for a corner but Juanfran scoops clear. Not for long, however, Real have another corner.

Another great chance for Real Madrid! Isco does brilliantly to work a yard of space for himself on the edge of the box and thread the ball through to Hernandez whose run was perfectly timed. It's a shame about the finish, however, as the Mexican scoops his effort over Oblak but also wide of the far post.

Real pick up from where they left off, pinning Atletico back in their own half. Hernandez tries to find an opening down the inside left and scampers past a few defenders into the box. He never fully has the ball under his control however and Miranda can step across to clean up.

And we are back underway for the second half. One change to bring you, Gabi has entered the fray in the Atletico midfield, replacing Saul.

No breakthrough at the Santiago Bernabeu where it has been a predictably tight affair between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo has the best chance of the half in the dying minutes of the first half but another fine stop from Oblak ensured the wait for a goal goes on.

In Monaco, we are still as we were. Juventus retain their lead thanks to Arturo Vidal's first leg penalty.

HALF TIME:

Real Madrid 0-0 Atletico Madrid (0-0 on aggregate)

Monaco 0-0 Juventus (0-1 on aggregate)

Best chance of the game (over both legs) falls to Cristiano Ronaldo. Mandzukic loses the ball inside his own half and Isco slides an excellent pass into the box. Ronaldo takes it first time, hammering on goal, but Oblak is again equal to it and makes another fine save.

Now it's Atletico's turn to lift a cross into the box. Koke takes it from just inside the Real half and drops it onto the head of Mandzukic, but he can only nod into the grateful arms of Casillas.

Rodriguez whips an inviting ball into the box but it is excellently claimed by Oblak.

Hernandez drifts out to the ring wing, prods the ball past Miranda who steps across to block the Mexican off retrieving the ball. Another Real free kick.

Neat stuff from Juanfran down the right as he ghosts in behind Isco and takes on Coentrao. He opts against the first time cross and by the time it does come in, Real are well placed to clear.

Ronaldo fizzes one over the wall that Oblak has to scurry across his goal line to keep out. It;s another corner, but Atleti clear.

From the corner, Atletico clear, but Pepe cleans up and works the ball back in field to Ramos who is then clipped by Turan as he turned past him. Real free kick from over 30 yards out...

Rodriguez now slips into space out on the right between the defence and midfield and can clip an inviting ball into the box. Hernandez again shows good movement trying to get on the end of it, but Godin again marshalls him well.

James Rodriguez's first touch lets him down inside his own box and Gamez is on the loose ball in a flash. He fires a powerful shot on target from 25 yards out, but it's straight at Casillas.

BREAKING: Cristiano Ronaldo lets someone else take a free kick.

Yep, you read that right, Ronaldo leaves it for Rodriguez who curls his effort over the wall but over the bar, too.

Ronaldo breaks into a sprint down the inside right channel before Gamez steps across and concedes the free kick. 26 yards out, Rodriguez stands over it, with Ronaldo (obviously) lurking.

Atletico are coming into this a bit now, first through a corner where they loaded the box to no avail and just now through Griezmann, who scampered in field from the left before being stopped in his tracks by Varane.

No goals at the Bernabeu, no goals in Monaco yet either. We'd already had three by this point yesterday. Sort it out, lads.

Real work the ball wide to Coentrao who clips a fine cross in for the left with Ramos racing to get on the end of it. Godin gets their first, however, and wins a free kick for his side too after pushed by the Real defender.

Pepe goes fishing for a reaction from Turan, going in hard on the Turk while clearing a routine ball. The Atletico man doesn't bite, however.

The away side have the chance from the resulting throw in to load the opposition's box, but Real clear.

Ronaldo (who else) has the first real shooting opportunity of the game, dragging a low effort wide of Oblak's post.

Oh, Hernandez. The Mexican combines neatly with Rodriguez, shifting the ball out to his right before continuing his run into the box. He receives the ball back from the Colombian but from a tight angle, lashes a hopeless effort into the side netting when he had better options on hand.

Carvajal finds a bit of space to whip a ball into the six yard area. Hernandez has drifted away from Godin but he can't get a clear connection on the ball and rather scuffs his shot over.

Carvajal drives forward until Ronaldo steps across to assume control about 25 yards from goal. He lashes the shot on goal but it's blocked well by Arda, who raced across from right to left to hurl his body in front of the Portuguese.

Gamez concedes a free kick out to his left, fouling Rodriguez. They fail to work anything of note from it, however.

Atletico venture forward for the first time as Saul tries to work a yard of space down the inside left channel. He tries to turn away from Ramos but loses possession. Ramos promptly hits the deck claiming he was struck by the outstretched arm of the Atletico midfielder. No one cares.

Atletico are sitting quite deep, as you may have expected. Real continue to probe.

Real dominating possession in the opening minutes. James Rodriguez tries to scamper in from the right but is dispossessed by a fine sliding challenge from Godin. Real regain the ball and work it to Kroos who takes the shot on from 25 yards, but it isn't worrying anyone as it sails wide.

Looks like Sergio Ramos is the man shifted into midfield alongside Toni Kroos.

And we are underway in both this evening's games.

The Champions League anthem is belting out around the Bernabeu as kick off approaches.

There are eight Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid players who are a booking away from missing the first leg of the semi-final. Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao and Toni Kroos make up the Real contingent while Cristian Ansaldi, Gabi, Jesus Gamez, Raul Garcia and Fernando Torres will have to watch their step.

Last night we saw both Barcelona and Bayern Munich saunter into the final four thanks to 5-1 and 7-4 aggregate victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Porto. They await their fate with the semi-final draw taking place this Friday.

As mentioned, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have met seven times since the Champions League final in Berlin last May. In each of those meetings, the reigning champions have failed to register a win.

Meetings this season:

Spanish Super Cup first leg – Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Spanish Super Cup second leg – Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid

La Liga – Real Madrid 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Copa del Rey – Atletico Madrid 2-0 Real Madrid

Copa del Rey –Real Madrid 2-2 Atletico Madrid

La Liga – Atletico Madrid 4-0 Real Madrid

Champions League quarter final first leg – Atletico Madrid 0-0 Real Madrid

Can the holders break the hoodoo this evening?

Team news is also in ahead of tonight's other quarter-final clash between Monaco and Juventus.

Monaco team to face Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Evra; Tevez, Morata

Juventus team to face Monaco: Subasic; Fabinho, Abdennour, Raggi, Kurzawa; Toulalan, Kondogbia, Silva, Moutinho; Carrasco, Martial.

It's one of four changes for Real tonight with Modric, Bale and Benzema all unavailable due to injury. Pepe, Isco and Javier Hernandez step in for the trio, while there is also an appearance for Fabio Coentrao, who comes in for the suspended Marcelo.

So Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Rafael Varane will all start this evening against Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid TV have suggested it will be the Portugal international to occupy a midfield role in the absence of Luka Modric. Kick-off is just under an hour away but it already looks very congested in the middle of the park.

BREAKING: Mario Mandzukic will continue his duel with Ramos, he leads the attack for Diego Simeone's side this evening.

Atletico Madrid team to face Real Madrid: Oblak, Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Jesus Gamez, Tiago, Koke, Saul, Arda, Griezmann, Mandzukic.

BREAKING: Javier Hernandez starts up front for Real this evening in the absence of Karim Benzema. It looks like either Pepe or Sergio Ramos have been moved further up the pitch to compensate for the absence of Luka Modric in midfield.

Real Madrid side to face Atletico: Casillas, Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Varane, Coentrao, Kroos, Isco, James, Ronaldo, Hernandez.

Real Madrid usually rely on their number seven to do the business on big nights like this but the pressure on Cristiano Ronaldo will be heavier than ever this evening. Karim Benzema, Gareth Bal;e and Luka Modric are all injured for Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Atletico Madrid may still be hurting from their loss in the final of this competition to Real Madrid last May, but they have certainly gone about getting revenge in the right way this season. Of the seven meetings these two have shared this season, Diego Simeone's side have not lost once. Avoid defeat again tonight and the memories of Berlin last year will be further erased.

It's finely poised at 0-0 ahead of kick off at the Santiago Bernabeu. In tonight's other tie, Juventus hold the slightest advantage over the unfancied Monaco, holding a 1-0 lead courtesy of Arturo Vidal's penalty kick off. Team news is expected shortly, we will have all the news as it reaches us.
