Champions League as it happened: Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid, Monaco 0-0 Juventus
Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid at the eighth time of asking this season thanks to Javier Hernandez's late winner. It was bad-tempered, scrappy, and downright ugly at times this evening, but a wonderful passage of play involving Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez, finished off by the Mexico international, has sealed Real's place in the final four and keeps them in contention for back to back Champions League's.
Monaco and Juventus meanwhile finished goalless, meaning the Bianconeri join a rather tasty line up for the semi-finals.
Real have their lead! Ronaldo bursts down the inside right, cutting inside to play a one two with Rodriguez. The return into the path of Ronaldo is perfect, and he has the chance to take on the shot from a difficult angle. Instead, he prods the ball across goal for Hernandez, who taps home in the dying minutes!
Another great chance for Real Madrid! Isco does brilliantly to work a yard of space for himself on the edge of the box and thread the ball through to Hernandez whose run was perfectly timed. It's a shame about the finish, however, as the Mexican scoops his effort over Oblak but also wide of the far post.
No breakthrough at the Santiago Bernabeu where it has been a predictably tight affair between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo has the best chance of the half in the dying minutes of the first half but another fine stop from Oblak ensured the wait for a goal goes on.
In Monaco, we are still as we were. Juventus retain their lead thanks to Arturo Vidal's first leg penalty.
There are eight Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid players who are a booking away from missing the first leg of the semi-final. Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao and Toni Kroos make up the Real contingent while Cristian Ansaldi, Gabi, Jesus Gamez, Raul Garcia and Fernando Torres will have to watch their step.
As mentioned, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have met seven times since the Champions League final in Berlin last May. In each of those meetings, the reigning champions have failed to register a win.
Meetings this season:
Spanish Super Cup first leg – Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid
Spanish Super Cup second leg – Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid
La Liga – Real Madrid 1-2 Atletico Madrid
Copa del Rey – Atletico Madrid 2-0 Real Madrid
Copa del Rey –Real Madrid 2-2 Atletico Madrid
La Liga – Atletico Madrid 4-0 Real Madrid
Champions League quarter final first leg – Atletico Madrid 0-0 Real Madrid
Can the holders break the hoodoo this evening?
Team news is also in ahead of tonight's other quarter-final clash between Monaco and Juventus.
Monaco team to face Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Evra; Tevez, Morata
Juventus team to face Monaco: Subasic; Fabinho, Abdennour, Raggi, Kurzawa; Toulalan, Kondogbia, Silva, Moutinho; Carrasco, Martial.
So Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Rafael Varane will all start this evening against Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid TV have suggested it will be the Portugal international to occupy a midfield role in the absence of Luka Modric. Kick-off is just under an hour away but it already looks very congested in the middle of the park.
BREAKING: Javier Hernandez starts up front for Real this evening in the absence of Karim Benzema. It looks like either Pepe or Sergio Ramos have been moved further up the pitch to compensate for the absence of Luka Modric in midfield.
Real Madrid side to face Atletico: Casillas, Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Varane, Coentrao, Kroos, Isco, James, Ronaldo, Hernandez.
Atletico Madrid may still be hurting from their loss in the final of this competition to Real Madrid last May, but they have certainly gone about getting revenge in the right way this season. Of the seven meetings these two have shared this season, Diego Simeone's side have not lost once. Avoid defeat again tonight and the memories of Berlin last year will be further erased.
It's finely poised at 0-0 ahead of kick off at the Santiago Bernabeu. In tonight's other tie, Juventus hold the slightest advantage over the unfancied Monaco, holding a 1-0 lead courtesy of Arturo Vidal's penalty kick off. Team news is expected shortly, we will have all the news as it reaches us.
