Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Premier League as it happened
Diego Costa winner secures three points for Blues at Stamford Bridge.
- Antonio Conte secures three points in first game in charge as Chelsea boss.
- Diego Costa scores late winner after James Collins wiped out Eden Hazard's opener.
Costa nets what will surely be the game's winner! Batshuayi nods the ball onto Costa who has time to look up and assess his options with James Collins standing off him. He has Pedro free off to his right but instead opts to shoot from just outside the box, arrowing one into the far corner, sparking some fairly mental celebrations from Antonio Conte.
I owe Victor Moses an apology, his first contribution is a beauty of a cross in from the left that looks destined for Batshuayi in the box. Just as he pulls back to shoot, Reid nods away, but only as far as Pedro who lashes one across goal towards the far corner. It veers agonisingly wide however and Chelsea pass up another chance.
Carroll wins the ball in the Chelsea half but urgently needs some help. Kouyate storms forward ahead of him but the striker looks to Tore who has popped up to his right. The former Chelsea youth player takes his eye off the ball at the wrong moment however and it rolls away from him, inviting Chelsea to come forward again.
Noble spends far too long dallying on the ball just outside the edge of his own area and Oscar robs him of the ball, breaking into the box before going down under a challenge from Winston Reid. Penalty? No, says Anthony Taylor. Oscar's hit the deck rather flamboyantly, but Reid did look to have stuck his arms out. Chelsea aren't happy.
Hazard brilliantly lures Nordtveit in over on the left and scampers away from him brilliantly, before trying to feed Costa, whose first touch lets him down. West Ham briefly get the ball back but Willian wins it again and breaks down the right. He too looks for Costa in the middle but againn his first touch is a poor one. Very rusty from the big Spaniard so far.
Just a few minutes until kick-off, here's a reminder of the teams.
Chelsea team to face West Ham: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry), Azpilicueta; Kante; Willian, Matic, Oscar, Hazard; Costa
Subs: Begovic, Aina, Fabregas, Loftus-Cheek, Moses, Pedro, Batshuayi
West Ham team to face Chelsea: Adrian, Antonio, Reid, Collins, Masuaku, Nordtveit, Ayew, Noble, Kouyate, Valencia, Carroll

Andy Carroll leads the line for West Ham tonight, but he will soon have some more competition for the role. Argentina forward has Jonathan Calleri joined the Hammers, pending international clearance, and is expected to link up with his new squad next week following Argentina's elimination at the Olympics. Bilic said of the 22-year-old:
He is a top striker. Unfortunately for him, but good for us, Argentina were knocked out of the Olympics this week, so he should be here with us pretty soon, depending on the work permit.
There are three Premier League debuts in the West Ham starting XI this evening in Arthur Masuaku, Håvard Nordtveit Andre Ayew. Gökhan Töre is also on the bench, alongside Dimitri Payet. Slaven Bilic warned last week the France international may not be completely match fit for the season opener and has opted against naming him in his starting XI.
Michy Batshuayi starts on the bench for Chelsea tonight but there is a full debut for N'Golo Kante. He partners Nemanja Matic in very formidable-looking midfield.
What's happening with Diego Costa, then? The prospect of a return to Atletico Madrid for the Spain international has been one of the biggest subplots at Stamford Bridge this summer, but surely we are too late into the summer transfer window for anything to happen now? Antonio Conte concurs.
I am happy that Diego stays here to work with us. We know that we can improve through the work and the most important thing is that the players have put themselves into this idea. Diego can give a lot to this team and I am sure he will have a good season.
Another West Ham signing in Arthur Masuaku is also in contention to make his debut tonight. The full-back signed from Olympiacos to fill the void at left-back created by Aaron Cresswell's serious knee injury has been cleared to play by West Ham's head of medical and sports science, Stijn Vandenbroucke, while the trio of Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and Darren Randolph are all available after sustaining minor knocks.
Team news: West Ham
Aaron Cresswell and Manuel Lanzini both suffered injuries during the Hammers' pre-season campaign, headaches Slaven Bilic didn't need. The West Ham boss also doesn't expect Dimitri Payet to complete 90 minutes tonight, having only recently returned to training following his summer rest.
New signings Andre Ayew, Sofiane Feghouli and Ashley Flecther are all in contention to make their league debuts. Bilic told a press conference last week:
We are still waiting to see on a couple of positions who are going to start. "Dimitri Payet is one of the players. He came back very fit. Like every player he needs a pre-season but he came back very motivated.
Team news: Chelsea
With the exception of Kurt Zouma, who remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury suffered last season, Chelsea have a clean bill of health to begin their Premier League campaign. Summer signings Michy Batshuayi and N'Golo Kante are both in line to make their competitive debuts this evening. Speaking to the press on Friday ahead of tonight's match, Antonio Conte said:
The match will be very good. They are a strong team. Last season they had a good season. They have a good manager and good, physical, fast players with great talent.
"Also it's a derby. These types of games are very tough. But we want to play and start the season. It's the first time for me for everything. To start with a derby is tough but I'm excited. It's important my players must start in the right way, to take confidence after a year last year.
Premier League football returned with a bang at the weekend and now it's time for Chelsea and West Ham United to join the party. This evening, we will get our first look at Antonio Conte's revolution at Stamford Bridge as he aims to revive the fortunes of a club who recorded their worst Premier League finish in 20 years last term.
Big things are expected from the former Juventus and Italy boss and his first test is a sizeable one against Slaven Bilic's West Ham. Last season, the Hammers thrived on their away trips to the league's big boys, picking up wins away tot Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City and draws at Manchester United, Leicester City and... Chelsea. Can do the same tonight? Doing so will get their top five ambitions off to a very healthy start.
Kick-off is at 8pm this evening; stick around for all your team news as it reaches us.
