Overview
The Lions will be looking to carry on their performance from where they left off in the 2012 season, having qualified for the finals but losing to the Sydney Sixers in an intriguing contest. The Lions have a wealth of options in their batting line-up with the likes of Quinton de Kock and Nathan McKenzie capable of obliterating the opposition single-handedly. Kock has been the star of South Africa's Ram Slam T20 Challenge campaign and is likely to be the deciding factor for the Lions in this tournament.
South Africa's T20 Champions are also well stocked in the bowling department with Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso their specialised spinners who are expected to make use of the conditions. Phangiso was the leading wicket taker for the Lions in T20s in South Africa and is likely to adapt well to the improved conditions for spin in the subcontinent.
The Scorchers have been plagued by injuries but will be looking to use their experience in management and in the squad to counter the Indian conditions. Justin Langer, their coach, has been part of the travelling Australian contingent on many occasions and is likely to provide some help when adapting to the heat and the nature of the pitch. Brad Hogg and Simon Katich are also in the team who are well acquainted to the subcontinent, which may give the Scorchers some added advantage in the long run.
However, Shaun and Mitchell Marsh are out with hamstring injuries, while Alfonso Thomas is representing Somerset and two of their most important players, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Michael Hussey are representing their respective IPL teams. Their spin line-up is extremely talented and the Scorchers will be hoping that the absence of their best players will be compensated by the likes of Ashton Agar, Michael Beer and Ashton Turner alongside Hogg.
