Cats have a habit of waking their owners up when they feel like it, but a Californian woman received an extra-rude awakening when a mountain lion leapt through her window and landed on her bed.

Security footage shows the big cat running in front of a truck before heading into a bowling alley door.

The juvenile lion then runs into the car park of an apartment building, where it was startled by a resident, before crashing through a window.

The woman in the apartment was sleeping but was fortunately not hurt in the incident.

The disorientated mountain lion received cuts, but ran back outside after the woman opened the back door for it.

"She was asleep and it landed on her bed and actually at first I think she said she thought she was dreaming, it didn't seem real," apartment manager Francis Muniz told Fox news.

Animal experts think the mountain lion may have become confused by its own reflection in the window.

Mountain lions, also known as cougars, are expected to visit towns and cities more often over the next few decades, as climate change drives their prey to greener pastures, a 2016 study suggests.

Although the cats once roamed nearly all of the US, they were hunted for sport. They were also targeted by farmers seeking to protect their livestock from the lions.
