Woman Arrested after Cyclist is Found Dead in the Road on Surrey Bypass
A woman is in custody on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident after a cyclist was found dead in the middle of the road in rural Surrey.
The 45-year-old woman was believed to be driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The young man, who had been riding a mountain bike, was found lying near an Esso petrol station on the A24 in Beare Green by a member of the public at 1.25am on Sunday.
Paramedics were called to the scene but he was pronounced dead soon after their arrival.
Surrey police say he may have been hit by a car.
Detective Sergeant Gary Wright said: "At this stage we are attempting to trace the vehicle involved and I would appeal to anyone who knows they were driving on this road at this time to come forward with any information they may have.
"It might also be that you know of someone who has returned home later than expected, or you have noticed some damage on a vehicle that was not there the day before."
The A24 Horsham Road was closed between the Beare Green roundabout and Mill Road, Holmwood, but has since reopened.
