The Dark Tower: First look at Idris Elba's hero The Gunslinger
In the world of camera phones, no secret is safe, particularly when it comes to movie sets and catching glimpses of certain actors in the costumes as they walk about the film lots in between shooting scenes. Such statements ring true here, with eagle-eyed fans capturing a first look at Idris Elba's character in upcoming fantasy action movie, The Dark Tower.
Elba is set to play the film's sharp-shooting protagonist, Roland Deschain, a gunslinger who sets out on a quest to find a mythical tower with the hope that its discovery and powers will save his dying world. Originally published by Daily Mail, the photos of him as Deschain, complete with Western-style get-up, were taken on the movie's South African set.
Despite the fact he was the only one spotted on set, Elba will star alongside Mad Max: Fury Road's Abbey Lee, Vikings actress Katheryn Winnick and Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey in the big screen adaptation of the first instalment in Stephen King's fantasy novel series of the same name. While newly-cast Winnick's role remains unknown, Lee will reportedly portray Tirana and McConaughey is lined up to play villainous character Walter Padick, aka The Man In Black. Watchmen actor Jackie Earle Haley, Doctor Foster's Tom Taylor and The Cabin In The Woods' Fran Kranz are also set to appear.
A Beautiful Mind's Akiva Goldsman and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Jeff Pinkner previously wrote the adapted script but now director Nikolaj Arcel (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) is supposedly working with fellow Danish film-maker Anders Thomas Jensen to put his spin on it.
Soundtrack composer Junkie XL, who has created music for films such as Kill Your Friends, Black Mass and Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice will be scoring the picture. The film is scheduled for both UK and US cinematic release on 17 February 2017.
