Defending champion Serena Williams dumped out of Rio 2016
Ukrainian Elina Svitolina defeats world number one 6-4 6-3 to reach quarter-final.
Defending champion Serena Williams has been dumped out of the Olympics Games after being defeated by Ukrainian Elina Svitolina at Rio 2016. The 22-time grand slam champion was out of sorts as her 21-year-old opponent completed a fine 6-4 6-3 victory.
Williams complained of a shoulder injury throughout the contest. After going a set down, Williams produced a lacklustre performance in the second set which included a game littered with five double-faults. Following the exit of Novak Djokovic in the men's competition, Williams becomes the latest high profile casualty in Rio.
"Obviously I'm disappointed," said Williams, who will end an Olympic Games empty handed for the first time, having been knocked out of the women's doubles alongside sister Venus. "The better player won. It was a great opportunity that didn't work out the way I wanted it to.
"At least I was able to make Rio, which was one of my goals. It was awesome, but it's over now."
