Floods triggered by two powerful earthquakes have damaged streets and buildings in the Christchurch suburbs of Parklands

Though there were no reports of large-scale casualties, many buildings were damaged and electricity and telecommunication lines were down.

"Inevitably. it would have caused damage to structures. We hope it hasn't unsettled any rock falls," Mayor Bob Parker said.

The authorities are still in the process of assessing the extent of damage.
