Manchester United and Liverpool kept apart in EFL Cup semi-finals
Two-legged semi-finals to take place in January.
EFL Cup semi-finals: Manchester United vs Hull City, Southampton vs Liverpool
- Jose Mourinho's side host The Tigers at Old Trafford in first leg of semi-final.
- Liverpool travel south for first leg against Claude Puel's side.
- Semi-finals to take place in weeks commencing 9 January and 23 January.
- Southampton eliminated Arsenal after superb 2-0 win at the Emirates while Manchester United cruised to 4-1 win over West Ham.
Manchester United and Liverpool are kept apart, then. Jose Mourinho's side get the best possible draw they could get against Mike Phelan's Hull City, with the first leg taking place at Old Trafford.
Liverpool travel down south for their first leg tie against Southampton, where they hammered the Saints 6-0 at the quarter-final stage of this competition last season. Claude Puel's side kept out the Reds in their Premier League meeting just a few weeks ago, however and welcome Jurgen Klopp's side to their own turf having thoroughly outclassed Arsenal to reach this stage.
While we wait, a quick word on this man.
Anthony Martial marked his return to the starting XI with a brace tonight and more importantly, with a performance more like those of last season. The France international was a constant threat down the left and in the box, something we have not seen enough of this term and showed superb composure to grab both of his goals.
The race for the first piece of silverware of the 2016-17 season is hotting up with just four teams left in the draw for the EFL Cup semi-finals.
Liverpool remain on course to reach the final of the competition for the second year running having dispatched of Leeds United at Anfield on Tuesday (29 November). A record-breaking strike from 17-year-old Ben Woodburn sealed their passage into the next round, bringing Jurgen Klopp a step closer to his first piece of silverware as Liverpool boss.
Any hopes of an emotional reunion between Rafa Benitez and Liverpool in the semi-finals were dashed on Tuesday as Hull City eliminated Newcastle United on penalties. The Tigers held their nerve after two goals in less than two minutes in extra-time, converting their first three spot kicks as Dwight Gayle and Yoann Gouffran was spurned.
The draw tonight will immediately follow Manchester United vs West Ham United. We are expecting it to take place at approximately 10pm but of course, the possibility of extra-time and penalties at Old Trafford means we might have to wait.
Here are the numbers to keep an eye out for this evening.
1) Hull City
2) Liverpool
3) Southampton
4) Manchester United or West Ham United
