They married without all the fanfare of a typical celebrity wedding but now details from Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's low-profile nuptials have emerged.

IBtimes UK rounds up eight things we know about the most highly-anticipated wedding of the year.

Wedding dress

The Maleficent actress wore a floor-length white satin dress, designed by Versace's Luigi Massi, which featured slim straps, a corseted waist and a full skirt. Her hair was styled in a chic chignon and covered by a long veil embroidered with designs from her six children's drawings.

Pitt opted for something he already owned and wore his favourite black suit for the big day.

Family Fun

Despite Jolie's glamorous dress, the ceremony was reportedly a "fun and relaxed" affair. The actress spoke to Good Morning America earlier this year and said the most important part of her wedding would be the children enjoying themselves.

"You know, I think the important thing is that whatever we do, it's that the kids do have a great time, and we all... take seriously the love, and the connection between all of us. But also just get silly and do something memorable." she said.

Children

As well as contributing to the dress, Jolie and Pitt's children also played key roles in the wedding itself. Zahara, nine, and Vivienne, six, acted as flower girls, tossing petals gathered from the garden.

Their sons Maddox, 13, and Pax, 10, walked Jolie down the aisle, wearing black suits to match Pitt's. According to People magazine, the children also helped write their parents' vows and Pax baked a cake for the party.

Location

The ceremony was held in the chapel of their lavish French castle and vineyard estate, Chateau Miraval near Correns in the south of France. According to reports, the 17th-century estate is worth over $60m (£36m) and is decked out with a cinema, swimming pool and bowling alley.

Guests

It was a very intimate affair with only 20 guests in attendance including Pitt's parents, Bill and Jane, his brother, Doug, his sister, Julie, and her two children.

Although Jolie's father Jon Voight was not present, he later issued a statement congratulating the newlyweds.

It's been a long time coming

The pair originally met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004, and Pitt proposed in 2012. At the time, he told E! News it was the children who really wanted the couple to get married.

"We're getting a lot of pressure from the kids," he said. "We didn't realise how much it meant to them and then, in getting engaged, how much it also means to us."

The Rings

The couple's wedding rings were reportedly designed by their friend Robert Procop, who also designed Jolie's 16-carat engagement ring.

Although her emerald-cut engagement ring is said to be worth around $500,000, they appear to have opted for simple gold wedding bands.

Third time lucky

It was Pitt's second marriage, having been previously married to Jennifer Aniston for five years. Meanwhile, it was third time lucky for Jolie, who was first married to Jonny Lee Miller, and then Billy Bob Thornton.
