World record signing Paul Pogba picked up an injury, which forced him to be withdrawn in the 30th minute and was replaced by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, the Swedish striker had limited influence as he continued to struggle to put the ball into the net.
Jeremain Lens, who is on a season-long loan from Sunderland, doubled the lead for Dick Advocaat's side from a brilliant free-kick. Wayne Rooney pulled one back for the visitors in the 89th minute, which was not sufficient for United to bag three points.
