Fifty Shades Darker overtakes Star Wars: The Force Awakens as most watched trailer in 24 hours
The steamy clip was viewed 114 million times - beating Star Wars by two million views.
After being unveiled earlier this week (13 September), the trailer for upcoming sequel Fifty Shades Darker has dethroned Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the most-watched trailer in 24 hours. According to Universal Pictures, the steamy clip was viewed 114 million times, across multiple platforms including YouTube, Facebook and Instagram during its first day online, beating out the previous title-holder by two million watches.
And the staggering numbers don't just stop there either. As stated first by The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer earned a huge 2.5 million viewers within its first hour, solely from the Fifty Shades official Facebook page.
Based on the second novel of the same name by E.L. James, the second instalment in the hugely-popular franchise sees Christian desperately try to win Anastasia over again after their seemingly-final break-up at the end of the last film.
In the trailer, we can see that his romantic gestures eventually win over the object of his affection but when his past flames start questioning their relationship and putting doubts in Ana's head, their future together becomes more fragile than ever.
Jamie Dornan reprises his role as Grey in the romantic-drama while Dakota Johnson is also returning as protagonist Anastasia Steele. Other familiar faces will include Rita Ora, Luke Grimes, Max Martini and Marcia Gay Harden as Grey's friends and family too. Newcomers this time round include The Neon Demon's Bella Heathcote as Grey's former lover (and stalker, apparently) Leila Williams, Tyler Hoechlin as author Boyce Fox, Hugh Dancy as psychiatrist Dr John Flynn and Kim Basinger as Grey's longtime friend and business partner.
Directed by James Foley (who is also on board to direct follow-up film and final instalment in the trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed too), the film is scheduled to reach cinemas in both the UK and US on 10 February 2017.
