Game Of Thrones creator George RR Martin responds to Outlander's Emmys snub
The bestselling author said the Starz show's leads and Tobias Menzies deserved nominations.
George RR Martin shared his excitement for Game Of Thrones getting 23 Emmy nominations, and also had some harsh words for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) snubbing Starz's period drama Outlander. Writing on his LiveJournal blog Martin said, "Outlander was robbed. All three leads were amazing… especially Tobias Menzies in his double role as Frank and Black Jack."
Outlander failed to receive recognition in any of the main categories for the major US TV awards. However, it was nominated for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period Program and Outstanding Costumes for a Period/Fantasy Series, Limited Series or Movie.
The Game Of Thrones writer also admitted that Eve Green deserved a nomination for playing Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful. He said, "Eva Green also deserved a nomination for her work in Penny Dreadful. Of course, every year has omissions. And right now it is harder than it has ever been. So many great, great shows to watch."
Speaking about GoT's outstanding nods, he said, "I am thrilled and happy for all our nominees, of course… but it made me especially happy to see Kit [ Harrington] and Maisie [Williams] get some love from the Academy at last. About damn time, I say. They are several years overdue. (And I would have loved to see Sophie Turner on that list as well. I know, I know, I'm greedy)."
He further stated, "Last year we won Best Drama, and we're nominated once again this year, so we have a chance to make it two in a row… against a formidable lineup of competitors in Homeland, Downton Abbey, Mr Robot, Better Call Saul, The Americans, and House Of Cards. David Benioff and DB Weiss got a nod for Writing, which they won last year."
Martin concluded his post by saying, "The awards will be presented on September 18 in Los Angeles. Two days ahead of my birthday this year, but maybe we'll get some presents anyway." The HBO's fantasy series received the most nominations, including Outstanding Drama and three slots in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama category.
