Gary Cahill's Chelsea future in doubt as Jose Mourinho targets summer move for Raphael Varane
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill reportedly faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge following suggestions that Jose Mourinho is planning a defensive reshuffle at the end of the current campaign.
According to the Daily Mail, the Blues boss is planning to revamp his defence next season, which could see the former Bolton defender left out in the cold.
It is believed that the Portuguese manager is looking to make place for the £16m left-back Filipe Luis in the team and that move will see Cezar Azpilicueta move to right-back position and current full-back Branislav Ivanovic move into central defence alongside captain John Terry.
Despite the former Real Madrid manager claiming that a new contract for the former Three Lions skipper is as good as done, there will come a time in the very near future, when the club will have to look for a replacement for the 34-year-old defender.
The report also claims that Mourinho has targeted a summer move for Raphael Varane, who he feels is a perfect replacement for Terry. The young Frenchman was signed for Real Madrid by the Chelsea manager and is now keen to be reunited with him in the Premier League.
It is believed that the west London club are having the defender watched. Varane, who initially struggled to nail down a place in the first-team, has now become a regular starter under Carlo Ancelotti at the Spanish capital club.
The 10-time European Champions will be reluctant to let go one of their key players for the future, but playing in the Premier League under Mourinho could turn the player's head.
Apart from the Frenchman, Atletico Madrid's Jose Giminez and Athletic Bilbao's Aymeric Laporte are also being monitored by the league leaders.
Cahill, who was a mainstay in Mourinho's defence alongside Terry, has now lost his place to young Kurt Zouma, who was preferred over him for the games against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup and against Manchester City in the league.
The report claims that the manager has lost his faith in the Three Lions defender and will now look to bring in reinforcements in the summer.
