Gotham casts House Of Cards star Nathan Darrow as supervillain Mr Freeze
Gotham has added another iconic villain as part of its Rise Of The Villains second season. Nathan Darrow, best known for playing Frank Underwood's bodyguard Edward Meechum in House Of Cards, is joining the prequel series as Victor Fries aka Mr Freeze.
As it concentrates on pre-Batman stories, Gotham is likely to show how Victor became alter-ego Freeze as well as some backstory behind who he was beforehand. Victor begun as one of Gotham's leading cryogenics engineers, but due to being incredibly smart and dedicated to his work, found himself as a bit of a loner most of the time.
The person he was close to his wife, Nora, fell ill with a terminal disease. Desperate to keep her alive, Victor went to extreme measures to find a way to freeze her before she died, but his experiment took a turn for the worse and resulted in him becoming Bruce Wayne's future nemesis, Freeze.
The recognisable character has been played by two previous actors on screen before: George Sanders on the 1960s TV series and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1997 flop, Batman & Robin.
Darrow is not the only new face, or baddie, the hugely popular show has added during season two. Pee-wee Herman actor Paul Reubens will also be making his debut appearance in the programme as the Penguin's father, Tucker Cobblepot. Interestingly, the cameo will not be the first time Reubens has played the snooty character, having first portraying him in Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns.
But it is not all about the bad guys when it comes to recent additions. The Shield's Michael Chiklis has recently joined the series as Police Department Captain Nathaniel Barnes, a character he has described in interviews as being a "countermeasure to all the villainy in Gotham".
Darrow will next be seen in HBO's TV movie The Wizard Of Lies opposite Robert De Niro, Lily Rabe and Michelle Pfeiffer and drama series Billions alongside Malin Akerman, Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti.
